Happy holidays, everyone!
As we move into the holiday season, Huntsville Water would like to remind all customers that colder temperatures are on the way. With freezing weather comes an increased risk of frozen water lines. To help protect your home and avoid potential issues, we recommend taking the following precautions:
• Inspect valve boxes and any exposed lines under your home. Ensure these areas are properly enclosed. If you notice exposed plumbing, wrapping lines with insulation or heat tape—and closing any openings—can help prevent freezing.
• Consider leaving a faucet running during extreme cold. Choose a faucet located in the room farthest from your water line’s entry point or one positioned on an exterior wall. Keeping a small, steady stream of water (just slightly more than a drip) helps maintain flow and greatly reduces the risk of frozen pipes.
• Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses. Leaving hoses attached can cause the faucet and connected pipes to freeze and crack.
• Protect outdoor faucets. Use insulated faucet covers or wrap them with towels and plastic to keep cold air out.
• Keep cabinet doors open when plumbing is on exterior walls. This allows warm air from your home to circulate around pipes in kitchens and bathrooms.
• Maintain a consistent indoor temperature. Sudden temperature drops inside the home can increase the risk of frozen pipes.
• Seal drafts around plumbing areas. Cold air entering through cracks—especially near crawl spaces, foundations, and utility openings—can freeze exposed lines. Insulating or sealing these areas can make a big difference.
• Know where your main shutoff valve is located. If a pipe does burst, shutting off the water quickly can help minimize damage.
